Originally the name of a station on the original Mexican land grant (1841) Cañada de los Alisos (Aliso being Spanish for "alder tree") and part of the area later called El Toro. Alder trees grow along Aliso Creek, which runs through the city. The developer of the area, the Mission Viejo Company, applied the name "Aliso Viejo."
