The name Buena Park is hybrid Spanish-English with the Spanish buena meaning "good." James Whitaker, a Chicago grocer, bought the land and, instead of establishing a cattle ranch as originally intended, established a town in 1887 at the urging of the Santa Fe Railway. A Santa Fe rail station there was named "Northam." Another early name for the area was Centralia.
