The town was founded in 1874 by physician, lawyer and developer, Dr. Alonzo Cook. Residents did not feel that the name suggested by him, Garden Grove, appropriately described the area's open terrain. Cook's response was, "We'll make it appropriate by planting trees and making it beautiful."
