Mission Viejo is Spanish for "Old Mission." The name is taken from Rancho Mission Viejo, a land grant in 1845 offered by the Mexican government from former lands of the Mission San Juan Capistrano. In the early 1960s, the O'Neill family, then owners of the land (acquired in 1907), sold off 10,000 acres to Donald Bren, Philip Reilly, and James Toepfer who formed the Mission Viejo Company for developing a new master planned community.  The first new residents of this community moved in 1966.
