In 1769, the Portola land expedition camped on the banks of the river flowing through here and named it El Dulcisimo Mombre de Jesus de los Temblores (the most sweet name of Jesus of the Earthquakes) due to the earthquake experienced there. The soldiers, however, simply called it Rio de Santa Ana in honor of Saint Anne, a name that seemed to stick. The Mexican land grant Santiago de Santa Ana was named for the river. Later, in 1869, William H. Spurgeon established a town site here and named it Santa Ana.
