The town site, founded by brothers Edward and George Amerigue, was named for George H. Fullerton, president of the Pacific Land and Improvement Company, a subsidiary of the the Santa Fe Railroad (then California Central). As an agent for the railroad, Fullerton was key to getting the railroad routed through the new town. His company not only received an interest in the development, but Fullerton was honored with becoming its namesake.
