The name Laguna (Spanish for "lake" or "lagoon") is a popular choice for communities in this area due to the long time popularity of the adjacent community Laguna Beach (click here for a background of this name). Laguna Woods originally consisted of a gated community for active senior adults named Leisure World, developed in the early 1960s from a portion of the former Moulton Ranch (1874). An earlier settlement was named El Sobrante.
