One of the early pioneers in the area, Sarah Ann McFadden, suggested in 1876 that the area be named Placentia, taken from Spanish meaning "pleasant place to live". This name was applied to a new school district in 1874. When a town site was finally established in 1910, it adopted Placentia as its name.
