The name San Clemente was given to the new seaside community in 1925 billed as a “Spanish Village by the Sea” with white stucco houses and red tile roofs. It was among the first planned communities developed from open land in the nation and was established by former Seattle mayor Ole Hansen. It is believed that he adopted the name from San Clemente Island that lay 60 miles offshore. The name is that of Saint Clement, the third pope and bishop of Rome.
