One of the soldiers escorting the Portola expedition through California in 1769 was Jose Yorba. Years later, in 1809, Yorba returned to the future Orange County and petitioned the King of Spain for a land grant there. He was granted 62,000 acres of land which was named Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. Almost a century later, in 1907, the Janss Corporation acquired a portion of these former Yorba lands and subdivided it for a new town named Yorba Linda. The name honored the former landowning family and Linda, the Spanish word for "pretty," was added.
