The community, one of California's first master-planned communities, was named for its founding developer, the Laguna Niguel Corporation (1959).  The name Laguna (Spanish for "lake" or "lagoon") has been a popular choice for area communities due to the long time popularity of the adjacent community Laguna Beach (click here for a background of this name). Niguel was derived from the Indian name Niguili, name of a Juaneño Indian village once located on Aliso Creek.  The development is a subdivision of a portion of the former Moulton Ranch (1874).
